Dear Families,
I am so excited to be your child's Kindergarten teacher. I have been teaching for 36 years and I do it because I absolutely love children and want to be there to inspire them as they begin their educational journeys. We have all adopted a College or University to promote College readiness. We have adopted California State University of Long Beach, my alma mater. I also give a nod to Cal State Fullerton where I got my Master's and the University of California, Los Angeles, UCLA, because I'm a fan and I had family who went there. Since my daughter is now attending Ohio Stat, we are now Buckeye fans and I have added that flag. We have the Long Beach 49er, Brutus Buckeye, and the UCLA Bruin Bear as our mascots. Our colors are black and gold or blue and gold, like or school colors. We will wear our University colors on Wednesdays and our school t-shirts/colors on Fridays.
This year we will have had Back to School Nite the Monday evening before school starts from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. (August 12, 2019) School starts on Thursday, August 15 and will have a normal schedule. On Mondays we have an early release day. We go from 8:00 AM to 12:51 PM. Tuesday thru Friday we go from 8:00 AM to 2:18 PM.
On the first day of school, please bring your child down to the classroom after you sign in at the front office. Don't forget to sign out when you leave. I am looking forward to meeting you all! I will talk to you for about 20 minutes and then you will be dismissed to meet with Dr. Porter, our principal, in the Multi-Purpose Room to establish a parent connection with our wonderful PTA organization. I also gave you all a note you can fill out to let me know if you wish to volunteer in our classroom. We won't start that until after a few weeks so I have a chance to bond with your child and establish rules and procedures for the classroom.
We have snacks at 9:50 AM every morning and will have a recess/PE in the afternoon that you might want to send a snack for as well. Since the day will be very long it is a good idea to have your child eat small frequent healthy snacks to keep their energy up and also their focus. Please teach your child how to open and close plastic snack containers and baggies. We are trying to avoid ant attacks brought on by open food containers and spilt food and drinks in the classroom. Please let me know what you want your child to eat for snacks and for their lunch. For example you can draw a smiley face on the items you'd prefer your child eats for snacks. The remaining items could be eaten for lunch. Remember you can order and pay for your child's lunch on line.
At the end of the day the 3 Kindergarten teachers and the T- teacher will be walking the students out to meet you out by the front gate or place them on their specified bus. On Back to School Night I gave you a note to fill out. The note tells me how your child will go home. If you indicate that someone else will be picking up your child please make sure that they have their driver's license or military I.D. as we will be checking them. Please be patient in the first days of school. I want to make sure your child goes home safely and happy. For this reason, I am requesting that you come 10 minutes earlier to pick up your child. This will help with the end of the day congestion and ensure a positive departure.
Take a look at our classroom supplies list. It is not necessary to buy everything on the list. However, please donate whatever you can. Kindergarten is a special place and we need lots of supplies. Keep in mind, I will be requesting some other items via our Bloomz website, including some donations towards some other websites we will be using this year in place of a lot of homework pages.
Thanks for checking out our class website. Keep returning to keep up with classroom news. Feel free to contact me with your concerns and questions. Let's work together to ensure your child has a terrific year.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Akman
